Healthscope appointed RCP to provide project management and specialist programming services for the design and construction of the new $55m inpatient unit at Brisbane Private Hospital. This brownfield extension provides a new 4,700sqm, five storey building which presents a new contemporary face for the hospital at the main entrance on Wickham Street. The new building provides mental health and inpatient support facilities, a surgical medical ward and consultant suites.

The inpatient unit development is the first new major development on the site, following a number of RCP managed internal refurbishments of the existing hospital, which have transformed the entire campus in preparation for this project over the past few years.

RCP project leader, James Goodson oversaw the development from concept design to occupation, guiding the project team to achieve all milestones throughout the design and delivery of this complex inner-city building project.

The project team had to overcome many challenges due to the new building’s location at the front entrance of the existing hospital and its close proximity to existing inpatient wards and operating theatres. The team also managed heritage overlay requirements and latent site conditions.

James and his team understood our specific needs and were able to successfully mitigate the significant risk posed to Healthscope whilst maintaining a harmonious team environment on this project. RCP demonstrated a high level of healthcare expertise and a detailed understanding of undertaking construction works in a live hospital environment. RCP proactively liaised with all stakeholders to minimise the impact to the hospital’s staff, patients and visitors.

Despite the significant challenges, this major construction project was delivered without causing any disruption or closures to the existing facilities and all clinical services in the existing building remained fully operational due to the detailed staging strategy formulated by RCP.

Construction completion was achieved on programme in September 2017, with the inpatient unit successfully opening for its first patients in October, following staff orientation and training. I congratulate James and the RCP team for their service excellence and outstanding commitment to this project. RCP’s leadership and experience were critical to the successful delivery of the new inpatient unit, which was delivered on time and on budget.

I would not hesitate in engaging RCP’s services again in the future.
