Tim Spencer, Head of Developments
Mulpha
2023
With the grand opening of the major hotel redevelopment imminent, I would like to take this
opportunity to thank the RCP team for their leadership in the project management of the major
$110 million upgrade of the InterContinental Sydney.
RCP was appointed to provide project management, superintendent, and specialist
programming services for the InterContinental Sydney redevelopment, the most significant
upgrade to the hotel in over 30 years.
A complex project, with the responsibility of handling a Sydney landmark with historical
significance and considerable heritage requirements, the redevelopment has delivered a new
lobby bar; Level 32 rooftop bar and terrace; 14 flexible meeting and event spaces; enhanced
food and fine beverage experiences, over 500 refurbished rooms and suites plus upgrades to
the front and back of house.
RCP commenced with early scoping for the project, through the ECI phase, construction to
completion, overseeing all aspects of the project. RCP developed and maintained collaborative
relationships with Mulpha representatives, the design team, building contractor, hotel
representatives and other key stakeholders throughout the project. The RCP team was always
on the front foot, seeking opportunities to add value and achieve the best outcomes for this
multi-faceted project.
There were several challenges the project team faced, including coordinating contractors and
construction in a live environment to minimise disruption. The COVID-19 restrictions and
mandates triggered a major downturn in travel in 2020-2022, labour shortages and material
delays. The team took the initiative to conduct parts of the major upgrade works during this
quiet period, which allowed for an earlier staged reopening of sections of the hotel as visitors
to the city have increased.
The RCP team was successful in coordinating the broader project team to accomplish the end
result, redefining this contemporary hotel, setting a new benchmark for luxury, while restoring
one of Sydney’s landmark heritage buildings.
RCP assisted with the coordination of an extremely meticulous project required to ensure the
heritage building have been honoured and the new adaptions respectfully integrated.
The upgrades have improved accessibility, sustainability, and the public spaces expected of
an internationally renowned five-star hotel.
It has been a pleasure to work with RCP on this project. I would be pleased to recommend
RCP to any company seeking reliable, hands-on, client-focused project management services.
