Introducing Foundry Theatre

December 5, 2024

RCP’s client Foundation Theatres is getting ready to bring the soon to be complete theatre to life. Kicking it off in style, performer and songwriter Tim Minchin will open the Foundry Theatre in February 2025, followed by an exciting lineup of musicals, comedy and immersive works.

The first programming announcement for 2025 features a lineup of live music, comedy, musical theatre and immersive cabaret.

A multi-purpose, flexible performance and event space it is suitable for a wide range of live entertainment and events. It can operate in multiple modes and has seating for a variety of performance types across floor and balcony levels. The floor seating can include tiered seats, floor seats and cabaret tables.

Foundry Theatre is located within the Sydney Lyric at The Star, 55 Pirrama Road, Pyrmont, NSW and building a theatre within a theatre is no mean feat!

Paul Rigby, Foundation Theatre’s Chief Operating Officer said,

“Building a new theatre is a rare thing because they are projects reserved only for the brave. I would like to thank everyone on the design and construction team for bravely taking on what has been a mammoth undertaking. All of us at Foundation Theatres are enormously proud of our new theatre.”

In response to a demand for premium live entertainment venues that can accommodate intimate, theatrical works, comedy, events, and live music Foundation Theatres developed the Foundry Theatre. An innovative reimagining of an underutilised backstage area of the Sydney Lyric, Foundry Theatre is a multi-purpose, flexible performance, and event space suitable for a wide range of live entertainment and events.

The stage of the Sydney Lyric was originally designed to accommodate large scale repertory opera and ballet. It allowed multiple productions to be performed in the cycle of a single week, with space for two sets that could be deployed in quick succession. Over its 30 year history, the Sydney Lyric has never been used for repertory productions and the rear stage was underutilised.

Foundry Theatre’s name draws inspiration from a traditional foundry, a space of transformation and creation.

Theatregoers will have access to the facilities of the Sydney Lyric, including box office, bars, cloakroom, and bathrooms and will experience Foundation Theatre’s signature premium service throughout.

RCP Director, Mark Dibben said of the project,

“It has been a great experience working with the entire Foundation Theatres team on this very special project. I am very much looking forward to seeing the theatre operational.”
