Ok Tedi Mine – Water Supply

Client
BHP Engineering

Features
15km of Pipeline
Construction of 3 Pump Stations
Construction of Power Generating Facilities
Diesel Fuel Pipeline

This project involved construction of some 15 kilometres of 700mm to 800mm diameter pipeline rising 900 metres from Tabubil to the giant Ok Tedi Copper Mine in the PNG highlands.

Construction of three pump stations, power generating facilities, HV reticulation and associated switch gear to each pump station as well as a diesel fuel supply line was also required for this project. The steep terrain resulted in the use of a funicular rail system to place some more difficult sections of the line.

Yearly rainfall at the site ranges between 8,000 and 12,000mm and occurs on average on some 312 afternoons every year. In spite of these difficult conditions the project was completed on schedule in just 12 months.

RCP’s role included scheduling, tracking and co-ordination of all site works, shipping and transportation.
