The Village, a development partnership between QUT and the Department of Housing, is an innovative mixed use development currently under construction on the former Gona Barracks site and adjacent land at Kelvin Grove. Approximately 70% of the 37 development lots are completed or under development.
At an estimated total cost in the order of $1 Billion, the village will comprise over 1,100 medium density residential units, University facilities, retail shopping centre and a range of public and university health and recreational facilities.
Infrastructure works including, roads, services and parks etc. have been completed the first University lectures commenced in early 2004; the first residents moved in and shops opened in 2006 and the first commercial tenants, the Red Cross Blood products commenced operations in 2008.
The University has provided over 60,000m2 of teaching and research space for the Creative Industries Faculty and the Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation.
The Department of Housing sites provide a possible development of 140,000m2 GFA. They have fully serviced development sites for mixed use, medium density, residential, student and seniors accommodation, affordable housing, and commercial office space with approximately 60% sold in 2008.
