In May 2013 RCP hosted a table at the Property Council luncheon in Townsville celebrating the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. With just over five years to go until the games begin, Games Corporation (GOLDOC) Chairman Nigel Chamier OAM and CEO Mark Peters spoke at the PCA event to give Townsville an update on current planning and what to expect as a satellite host venue in 2018. Both Townsville and Cairns will host the preliminary rounds of the men’s and women’s basketball competition. Benefits for these North Queensland host venue cities include venue upgrades and employment and volunteer prospects. The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games will be the biggest event in Australia for more than a decade and the first time Australia will stage a Commonwealth Games outside a capital city.
